Märta Måås-Fjetterström – Her Life and Works

Märta Måås-Fjetterström (1873-1941) was a legendary Swedish textile artist and has a unique position in Swedish textile history. In the 1930s enthusiastic critics said she was the greatest textile artist. She received international recognition in her lifetime. When Märta Måås-Fjetterström passed away, about 700 sketches for compositions for rugs and fabrics were left behind at her studio in Båstad, established in 1919. After her demise the company became Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, featuring a long line of other textile artists with fantastic creations of their own. Märta Måås-Fjetterström's compositions are in high demand, still made by hand at the studio in Båstad, Sweden, interpreted by skilled artisan weavers. Her rugs and tapestries all belong to an intriguing world where inspiration can be found anywhere – for instance in a street in Perugia, in old myths and tales where brave knights, horses and unicorns appear. It could be found in a rye field, in lyrics, among symbols, modern lines, patterns, trees and flowers.
