Tennis history in Båstad

From Party Game to Professional Sport

”Fifteen – love”. For more than a century the unique scoring system has been closely connected with summers in Båstad. Tennis, originally a party game for ladies in elegant, long dresses and gentlemen in suits and bowler hats, is now a sport attracting incredibly fit and skilled professionals of international renown as well as amateurs worldwide. During your tennis walk you will imbibe the atmosphere of the beautiful centercourt, surrounded by the sea and the lush Ridge of Halland. Names such as Björn Borg, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Rafael Nadal and Robin Söderling are eternally linked to nail-biting moments in the magic history of tennis

Annually on Dec 10 Stockholm is in the centre of everybody’s attention during the Nobel Prize Award ceremony. It is maybe not common knowledge that Båstad in southernmost Sweden has its own Nobel history. Keen on finding out more? Please join a guided Nobel Walk, given by Guide Ingrid Persson Skog.

Ludvig Nobel, nephew of famous Alfred Nobel, came to the small seaside resort of Båstad in 1905. He fell in love with the scenery but also sensed the great potential of the place. He bought big land areas for development. Soon there were high-class restaurants, luxury hotels, leisure activities and members of the Swedish royal family in abundance. This thanks to Ludvig Nobel’s visions, never-ending work and solid financial background. Golf and tennis became the very symbol of Båstad, attracting thousands of visitors. His commitment when it comes to preserving local heritage sites is still noticeable. Interested? Welcome to a Nobel walk!
